Overview
According the Queensland Design Curriculum 鈥淎ustralia needs enterprising and innovative individuals with the ability to make discerning decisions concerning the development, use and impact of technologies. When developing technologies, these individuals need to be able to work independently and collaboratively to solve complex, open-ended problems. Subjects in the Technologies learning area prepare students to be effective problem-solvers as they learn about and work with contemporary and emerging technologies.鈥 (Design Syllabus, QCAA, 2018). Therefore, this course is designed to consider the elements of Design used in senior school which are key in the technology and design teaching area. The purpose of this course is to provide pre-service educators with the knowledge and skills required to engage with the Design components of the QCAA General Subject.
This course provides opportunities for pre-service teachers to use the double diamond design method endorsed by the QCAA to showcase their knowledge and skills in a real life context. This course is an independent project where students are able to identify a design opportunity for real life problems and generate a graphical solution. Pre-service teachers will create a Design folio as part of their assessment that can be used as a resource when teaching in secondary schools.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- analyse a specified context to identify and refine design requirements relevant to curriculum specifications;
- successfully communicate and collaborate with groups on design related problems and contexts to address real world design problems;
- select and appropriate apply research methods, data collection and statistics to identify and investigate relevant design factors, analyse existing designs and justify design decisions;
- communicate ideas through sketching and drawing techniques;
- produce low fidelity prototypes;
- create a folio which addresses all the elements of the Double Diamond (QCAA Design Process) method to support student learning.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
