Overview

This course builds on the reporting and writing techniques learned in JRN1020. It expands your journalistic practice to an expected level of higher proficiency, and provides you with the knowledge to research and produce journalism for areas of specialisation or coverage. It is also intended to help you further develop your knowledge of the roles and functions of the media, and your responsibilities as a professional journalist.

This course teaches you to find, report and write news stories for key reporting rounds including hard and soft news. It builds on the news judgment and writing skills learned in JRN1020. The emphasis is on learning by doing, and you will gain considerable practice in interviewing, reporting and developing audio/visual techniques, underpinned by theoretical knowledge. This course requires you to develop your professional practice to include self-management of deadlines and proficiency in interpersonal communication. You will be required to undertake professional-standard telephone conversations and conduct in-person journalistic interviews in this course.
