Overview

The purpose of this course is to provide knowledge about different learning interventions that challenge individual thinking and how organizations learn. Built from a foundation of knowledge management, you will learn how to manage the stocks and flows of knowledge. Based on the interplay between learning and knowledge, the course is required to build the adaptive skillset of change agents within any organisation such as the ability to craft a learning environment and learning culture. You will be able to appreciate how different national, global and professional standards can be met by appreciating how these different external environmental inputs create stimuli for which the organization has to respond appropriately.

This advanced course examines the rise of the knowledge-intensive organisation and its broad relationship to the new demands of the knowledge economy. Key elements of the course consider the nature and purpose of knowledge, knowledge work, and learning within and across organisations. These connections form the basis for having purposeful knowledge management and organisational learning strategies and systems for developing high performance knowledge and learning organisations. The course equips you with skills related to organisation learning through a complex lens of external environmental inputs and internal processes related to learning cycles and learning routines enabling reflection between thought and action. This will help you to move toward a more strategic use of knowledge and learning in organisations. You will work together on a professional project that showcases your ability to examine and provide advice on a relevant knowledge management and (or) organisational learning process.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. examine and classify theories, concepts and discussions associated with knowledge management, intellectual capital and organizational learning;
  2. apply principles associated with the management of knowledge, approaches to organizational learning and the digital technologies which support knowledge processes;
  3. participate as a collaborative member of a project group to solve a problem and recommend solutions in relation to a managing knowledge/ organisational learning issue;
  4. communicate in a credible and professional manner with a range of specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Students are encouraged to access reference materials as recommended below and/or do further research on relevant materials for the course.

Student workload expectations

To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
