Overview
This course aims to assist students to transition into work as a professional musician in a broad range of contexts.
It is now recognised internationally that leadership plays a vital role in creating and sustaining professional careers in music. Leadership skills are used by musicians across broad professional contexts from creative practice through to collaborations and work in both education and the community.
The aim of this course is for students to consider and position themselves as leaders within the music industry in ways consistent with their personal values as musicians. This course draws on international developments in thinking around musicians and leaders to provide students with a platform from which to strategically launch a professional portfolio career in music and music-related fields.
This course considers the ways in which musicians lead, the skills required to do so, the contexts in which leadership is enacted and the ways in which leadership can be leveraged to support sustainable career development.
The course explores leadership within music-specific contexts to guide students to consider how they develop their own leadership skills consistent with their personal values and career aspirations. Challenges faced by musicians when leading will also be considered, including issues relating to equity, diversity and representation.
Students will draw on their previous experiences of leadership in music practice courses and their own practice more broadly to consider at an advanced level the role of leadership in their future careers. Students will be assessed via work-integrated learning tasks (personal inventory, case studies/self-experiment and video CV) to demonstrate their understanding of the leadership role of musicians, and to apply this knowledge to their own future career development.
Course learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Identify and reflect upon the leadership skills required of professional musicians across a broad range of contexts
- Classify, compare and examine other musicians and themselves as leaders in relation to a broad range of professional music contexts
- Critically analyse and communicate different professional music contexts to identify the ethical issues of leadership and cultural awareness, identify challenges and formulate strategies to address these
- Plan their career in accordance with their own personal values and motivations
