Overview
This course is one of eight, first year, foundation courses in the Bachelor of Nursing Program. Registered nurses are required to have a basic knowledge of how nursing theories evolved over time to influence the profession today, to understand the foundations of the professional governances that guide practice, and their requirements to meet professional, legal, and ethical obligations in a dynamic health care system. This course will provide students with an introduction to professional practice. Professional practice ensures nurses develop a sense of identity, knowledge of nursing theories, the Australian health care system, the legal, ethical and safety frameworks governing health practice.
This course will introduce nursing theories and how they shape the nursing profession. It will acquaint students with how the law in Australia operates and impacts on the delivery of health care services, and the nursing governances that all nurses must follow including standards for practice, code of conduct, and the code of ethics. The student will be introduced to ethical principles and practices as they apply to self, intraprofessional, interprofessional, and person and family centred practice in a dynamic health care system.
As per the BNSG Program Rules, students are required to attempt and submit all assessment items in a course. This program rule forms part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council [ANMAC].
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- Identify and reflect on nursing philosophies and theories and how they underpin contemporary nursing practice.
- Recognise and recall how the Australian legal system, laws, policies, and regulations influence the Australian health care system.
- Identify ethical principles in nursing care and apply foundational principles to professional practice.
- Identify and apply relevant governances and standards to professional nursing practice.
- Describe the relationships between theory, regulation, ethics, law and the scope of nursing practice.
