NUR1399 Foundations of Nursing Practice is one of eight, first year, foundation courses in the Bachelor of Nursing Program.

For an undergraduate nursing student, the ability to link theory to practice is integral. This placement course relates to skills developed in the foundational nursing courses in first year. This course enables students to integrate theoretical knowledge into practice whilst caring for individuals across the lifespan. Students will be able to apply beginning clinical skills of a Registered Nurse in accordance with the NMBA standards across a range of clinical settings managing the health priorities of individual in a variety of clinical settings. To enhance employability there is a focus on developing beginning career relevant specific knowledge, skills, and attributes. The clinical placement experience will provide an opportunity to begin formation of the students nursing professional identity. Students will also start to identify industry contacts and possible career pathways.

The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant).

This placement course includes professional experience placement aimed at developing fundamental assessment and practice skills applicable to all settings and age groups. Nursing students will develop an understanding of the process of applying knowledge and expertise to a clinical situation to develop a solution. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) standards for practice for the Registered Nurse, are used as a framework to guide students. Specific areas are in relation to person-centred care, patient safety, cultural and contextual competence, and developing practice.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the principles of professional nursing practice, including assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care, for patients across the lifespan, during placement-based work integrated learning.
2. Demonstrate competency towards the NMBA standards of practice for Registered Nurses under the supervision of a registered nurse.
3. Enact professional nursing behaviours during the placement-based work integrated learning.
4. Apply the principles of a person-centred and self-care approach when practicing basic nursing skills.
