Overview
Work as a Clinical Psychologist requires advanced knowledge and skills in relation to diagnosis, assessment, and intervention with a broad spectrum of clients, including those with complex and severe psychopathology. This course aims to provide student with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively diagnose and assess complex mental health presentations, and develop effective treatment plans based on in-depth case formulations.
This course provides students with a working knowledge of psychopathology for complex psychological presentations, in addition to an understanding of the aetiology and nosology of these presentations. Further, this course provides students with strong diagnostic and clinical assessment skills required for working effectively with complex adult presentations, including: Personality Disorders, Psychosis and Bipolar I and II, Complex Trauma and PTSD, Addictions, and Adult Developmental Disorders.
Attendance at the on-campus workshops is mandatory. Dates of the on-campus Workshop Teaching Block will be according to the 'Workshop Schedule' which will be emailed to students at the outset of the program.
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- Accurately assess and diagnose complex mental health presentations using major classificatory systems.
- Conduct advanced differential diagnosis with complex and severe mental health conditions.
- Apply key evidence-based theory and case formulation skills to Clinical Psychology intervention planning for complex and severe Psychopathology.
- Consider personal biases and ethical reasoning when providing assessment and interventions to those with complex mental health needs.
