This course aims to provide post graduate students with the fundamental techniques needed to undertake rigorous qualitative research. The course is designed to familiarise students with a range of qualitative methodologies that will be required for those undertaking qualitative components of a research thesis.

Emphasis will be placed on rigorous engagement with methodologies drawing on a range of epistemological positions, developing the skills required for qualitative post graduate research. The course will draw on several methodological approaches including Discursive Psychology, Phenomenology, and techniques of Thematic Analysis and systematic approaches to literature reviews (SLRs). Core components of the course include the use of the qualitative software analysis tool NVivo.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

1. Specify and define specialised research skills that will enable them to advance knowledge within their discipline
2. Identify appropriate methodological and analytical techniques to address various kinds of research questions, appropriate to the aims of their project;
3. Cogently present research findings in a discipline- appropriate manner
4. Select and apply relevant methods to explore, visualise and evaluate research data, resulting in appropriate conclusions being drawn from the findings.
