Overview
Professional theatre workers need to develop the capability for independent practice. Independent practice involves the design, planning and implementation of creative projects that achieve established goals within defined timeframes, dedicated resources and paradigms of practice. Theatre workers engaged in independent practice apply high levels of autonomous capability. This involves the organisation and strategic planning and application of appropriate skills pertinent to interpretation, rehearsal and developmental work processes articulating into performance. This course engages students in authentic learning projects, which enable them to progress learned skills in creative and interpretive practice in both live and digital mediums. Assigned to projects in both supervised and unsupervised contexts, students negotiate ongoing iterative processes of project development and skills/knowledge advancement towards a capability for autonomous independent practice.
In this course, students confer with staff for assignment to one or more performance projects in either the live or digital mediums. Utilizing work processes and conditions that reflect current professional practice, students will fulfil production, creative and performance roles affixed to projects with live public, community engagement or digital presentation outcomes. Students will complete a series of authentic assessment tasks based on industry practice in performance training linked to real-world industry training experiences. Projects may be short in production duration, in which case students may negotiate to engage with more than one production for the semester. Alternatively, projects might have a longer production duration, in which case students may negotiate to engage with only one project for the semester. Projects may involve original, adapted or published/existing material. The Head of School will approve proposed projects for production, subject to the allocation of sufficient resources, personnel and faculty facilities to realize project goals.
Additional staff may be assigned to one or all of the projects in production to fulfil specific roles or duties. Theatre staff will consult with students a minimum of 4 hours per week to facilitate skills development and reflective practice.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Effectively plan and fulfil defined processes, roles and outcomes within the context of a creative arts project
- Develop creative solutions to challenges and problems, drawing on learned skills, techniques and approaches, in supervised, collaborative and autonomous contexts.
- Advance existing knowledge and skill sets in the identification and resolution of technical and processual problems through the application of research and reflective practice. .
- Critically reflect upon, evaluate and persuasively communicate project outcomes, processes and individual skills acquisition and learning.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
