Overview
This course responds to the Tertiary Preparation Pathway aim of recognising and supporting diverse learners on their individual pathways to university study and their life goals. The course helps students develop the skills and knowledge necessary for success in undergraduate study. Students develop awareness and understanding of the culture and practices of a contemporary university community, and familiarity with a range of institutional expectations, practices, and academic learning contexts. The course offers students a range of learning opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to become self-managed, flexible, and active learners, able to identify and respond effectively to learning challenges.
This course introduces students to the culture and practices of a contemporary university community. Students develop a broad understanding of academic culture, values and expectations and develop a range of skills, strategies, and knowledge needed to become confident and adaptable learners. The course emphasises the importance of adopting `active' rather than `passive' approaches to learning and developing a `growth' mindset. `Spaces for reflection' are embedded throughout the course to provide students with the opportunity to connect past and current learning and experiences and reflect on challenges likely to be encountered when transitioning to university study. Student learning is assessed through a portfolio of tasks and two quizzes requiring active engagement with course materials and learning experiences.
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- Identify key features of university culture, practices and academic learning contexts.
- Identify and evaluate the nature and impact of challenges likely to affect their own transition to university study and propose effective strategies for managing these.
- Recognise the difference between ‘active’ and ‘passive’ approaches to learning and demonstrate a basic ability to apply active learning techniques to academic texts.
- Evaluate their own academic performance and prepare a personal plan that indicates future study/career directions.
