Overview

It is important for radio production professionals to have the required knowledge and skills of the business of radio and the associated roles to on air and production within a radio station. These knowledges and skills help ensure the professional knows how each part comes together to make the whole radio station becomes increasingly important. It develops a respect and awareness of the roles, it provides the opportunity to explore other employment opportunities.

The on-air talent tend to be the public facing side of the radio station, how their talents and popularity can be harnessed is what the student will explore through station promotional activities. What they put to air, what drives the radio station into the direction it goes is the matter of management and programming. It is here that we will learn of and appreciate the value of the audience, what ratings will influence and how a radio station understands that it is meeting its targets and objectives.

The student should gain the knowledge and skills associated with and an awareness of the various roles within a radio station, including: radio sales, promotional activities, programming the radio station, ratings, podcasting, online and social media presence. These are foundational elements of a radio station and for building a solid career in the industry.

The student should be acquire the knowledge of radio programming and management from the perspective of community radio, public broadcasting and commercial radio. The value of the radio station `brand' and its involvement within the community.

This will open up an appreciation the broad range of roles and skills required within a radio station and how these support the on air talent. Local radio stations will be providing guest presenters and opportunities for work experience will be offered over the semester.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and explain the relationship between the audience and radio station through ratings
  2. Evaluate the role of promotional activities as a strategic function of radio
  3. Appraise social media and online content to the promotional activities to a radio station plan
  4. Develop a model for programming a radio station based on key attributes including geographic location and demographics

Student workload expectations

To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks.
