Overview

Teaching mathematics in school settings can be both challenging and rewarding. This minicourse provides a foundation for teachers who are new to teaching mathematics. By working collaboratively and independently, students will be encouraged to begin to think mathematically, and through practice in a supportive environment, will gain confidence in solving mathematical problems. In addition, students will be able to draw upon techniques and approaches from experienced teachers.

In this minicourse, students will be asked to reflect on their beliefs around mathematics, their current mathematics skills, and what makes a great mathematics teacher. Students will also consider the language and communication approaches, as well as teaching strategies, that are known to work best for mathematics education. Finally, the minicourse will introduce different curriculum strands and engage with and reflect on some common misconceptions in mathematics.
