Overview
Local government is a key stakeholder in urban and regional development. Planners require an understanding of local government鈥檚 role and responsibilities in the planning process as well as the planning practices and technologies implemented by local governments.
This course will cover the controls and procedures used by local government in the development of their communities. The details of the development assessment process along with community engagement, communication, negotiation and ethical considerations associated with planning submissions will also be covered.
Course learning outcomes
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the essential elements to a planning scheme;
- Explain in detail the development assessment process and the statutory time limits associated with that process;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the powers and responsibilities Local Government Authorities;
- Explain how technology can be applied to facilitate the planning process;
- Demonstrate knowledge of community engagement strategies;
- Prepare planning applications suitable for submission to a Local Government Authority;
- Apply knowledge of the post approval stage including negotiation and the application appeals process;
- Demonstrate an ability to learn from experience by reflecting on the design and communication processes used during the completion of assignments.
