Requisites

Pre-requisite or Co-requisite: CDS2000 and HSW2120. Students must have completed at least 4 courses before undertaking placement.

Other requisites

This course includes 210 hours of placement in the human services, health, community, disability and aged care sectors. It is possible to undertake a placement outside of Australia subject to approval of a proposal and the obtaining of a qualified overseas supervisor. Students will require access to e-mail and have internet access to UConnect for this course.

Outcomes of student and supervisor negotiations must have the approval of the Course Examiner. Students must enrol in this course in their selected semester and complete all course requirements within the term enrolled unless alternative arrangements have been made and approved by the course examiner.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Working with Children: State law in Queensland requires that all adults (including university students in industry placement) working with children under the age of 18, in the State of Queensland*, obtain approval before commencing such work. This course includes a practical component (professional experience, project work, research, assessment etc.) that may require engagement with children under the age of 18. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess a current suitability card (Blue Card) before commencing any practical components of this course. DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN UNDER 18 UNLESS YOU POSSESS A CURRENT 'BLUE CARD'. *If you are undertaking practical experience outside the State of Queensland, Australia you should check local requirements.

Synopsis

The course offers students the opportunity to undertake placements with human services organisations working with different client groups. Examples of placement organisations include aged care, community organisation, Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) associations, and volunteer groups and so on. Students work closely with their agency supervisors to develop and adhere to a learning plan that includes attributes such as ethical practice, confidentiality, cultural awareness and professional development. The placement allows students to gain insight into the skills required for working and interacting with clients, communicating effectively with stakeholders and managing day to day functioning.
