Overview

Nursing clinical leadership is about the leadership demonstrated by the Registered Nurse in a clinical setting. Registered Nurses in advanced practice positions provide clinical leadership to health care team members in the pursuit of quality health outcomes. It is vital for Registered Nurses to have the knowledge, self-reflective practice and skills needed to achieve effective leadership in practice. It is the process of leadership, and its application in practice that requires the registered nurse to have self-awareness, leadership capacity and knowledge surrounding the legal and ethical parameters of leading in a clinical environment. This course explores the inclusion of the registered nurse as change agent, visionary and advocate for both the consumer and the profession of nursing.

This Masters level course explores contemporary issues related to theoretical concepts surrounding clinical leadership in practice for registered nurses working in health care organisations. To practice effectively the understanding and the application of clinical leadership is required. This course contains four modules of study which together provide registered nurses with a detailed exploration of the context of clinical leadership in practice including professional practice frameworks and theoretical concepts surrounding clinical leadership. Reflection is used to gain self-awareness of leadership traits and attributes. Students will apply the principles of clinical leadership in practice inclusive of the role of change agent, visionary and advocate; and gain an understanding of the legal, ethical and social justice approaches to clinical leadership in health care settings.
