Overview
A need has been recognised to effectively prepare students from non-English speaking backgrounds to gain skills in English for academic and professional purposes and develop strategies to equip them for successful university study specific to their professional areas. This course will develop students’ reading skills in an academic and discipline-specific context and will provide opportunities for students to increase their ability to comprehend, critically analyse and reflect on a range of extended texts. It will also develop students’ abilities to understand and meaningfully respond to texts related directly to their chosen professions.
This course assists students to transition to an Australian Academic culture via explicit instruction and the cultivation of independent and ethical practices of knowledge acquisition and expression. It develops both intensive and extensive reading skills required for university and professional studies. These include: previewing, predicting, applying pre-existing knowledge, contextualisation, vocabulary development and the capacity to critically analyse and evaluate text. Furthermore, students will learn how to understand, assess and respond to a range of texts that are relevant to their professional disciplines. The course encourages students to gain the confidence and capability to access, classify and utilise academic and professional texts relevant to their chosen study and career paths.
