Overview
The suite of eight Practice meets Theory courses create the structure around which the four-year Education Degree is developed. Each year there are two opportunities to connect to real-world teaching contexts through Professional Experience to theoretical knowledge in a carefully sequenced approach to developmental needs. Research indicates the importance of professional experience that commences early in teacher education and is highly integrated with university-based teaching. This is the second of a suite of eight Practice meets Theory courses that affords pre-service teachers opportunities to connect to real-world teaching contexts, scaffolding their development toward graduate teacher capabilities.
This first year second semester course provides the opportunity for pre-service teachers to attend contexts and apply the micro-skills of teaching within a scaffolded process using mentor teachers and pedagogical content from coursework. Learners will plan and teach utilising elements of a Gradual Release of Responsibility model. They will develop competencies in effective questioning, facilitating group learning and using student performance to identify foci for future planning and teaching. Coursework focuses on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and includes a 10-day professional experience attended in a block.
For full details of the professional experience particulars, please refer to the Professional Experience website and the Professional Experience Book.
