Overview

Professionals working with children and adolescents consistently rate the management of children's social and behavioural problems as one of their major concerns. It is therefore essential that professionals are able to deploy the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively deal with these problems in a way that promotes positive wellbeing and development for all children. The overall aim of this course is to introduce professionals working with children to information concerning the following: emotional and behavioral problems of children and adolescents; the nature of the causes of these problems; various approaches to assisting young people to overcome these problems.

This course outlines the kinds of emotional and behavioural difficulties helping professionals can expect to encounter in their fields of practice and elaborates on a range of strategies, both preventive and remedial, for responding in a positive and effective manner. The intent of the course is to assist professionals to develop a sound understanding of the nature of emotional and behavioural problems of children and young people, and to develop an awareness of appropriate ways of dealing with the difficulties. This course will provide a foundational understanding of these issues facing young people, critique of the intervention and prevention approaches employed in their field and provide opportunities for student to apply their understanding of these emotional and behavioral difficulties to their professional context. . The course is delivered in an online environment, utilising online discussions and virtual classrooms (such as zoom) and also offers practical application opportunities, whereby students explore various ways of dealing with these issues, with the emphasis on applications within the human services context.
