Overview
This course prepares nursing, midwifery, social and public health practitioners, to work effectively within culturally diverse populations, moving towards the achievement of a culturally safe health and social care workforce. This course addresses the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the National Scheme鈥檚 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Strategy 2020-2025.
The purpose of this course is to enable health and social well-being practitioners to increase theoretical understanding of the ways in which culture determines health outcomes. Students will be encouraged to reflexively explore their role in cultural practices within health care systems that impact on the health and well-being of diverse populations.
This course encourages the health professional to explore the impact of the personal upon the professional through taken for granted cultural norms within health and social care practice. Students will be encouraged to explore the notion of power and privilege through a reflexive cultural lens. Developing a skill for cultural self-awareness will empower the health care professional to contribute to cultural and organisational change within their area of professional practice.
