Overview

Policies are sets of principles, rules and statements of intent that guide decisions within organisations to assist them to achieve their mission and purpose.  When formulating policies, organisations need to consider a range of internal and external factors.  Internal factors include risk appetite; governance models; CSR; ethics; organisational purpose; and values.  External factors include the local, national and global political and regulatory landscapes, socio-economic factors, and the competitive environment.  Shaping policy requires leaders who can draw on and leverage the collective intelligence of diverse groups who can offer perspective and expertise on those various influencing factors.  Operating in a way that considers both the internal and external factors requires the crafting and communicating of careful policy and the ability to galvanise the organisation to embrace the values and mission of the business.

This course will examine the range of factors that influence the shaping of organisational policy. Effective leaders need to be able to navigate the sometimes competing or conflicting demands of these various factors, to ensure they meet compliance obligations whilst still maintaining opportunities for growth. You will learn to consult, collect and consider multiple perspectives to shape appropriate policies and to evaluate policies in relation to the principles of good governance, risk, public interest and ethical and legal requirements. The final step in the process of shaping organisational policy is the evaluation and reporting of outcomes. To achieve this, you will be required to apply appropriate communication strategies to advocate to, and engage, key stakeholders in the adoption and implementation of these policies.
