NUR3299 Contemporary Nursing Practice

Overview

Undergraduate nursing students need an ability to link theory to practice. As students enter the final year of the program, this course enables students to integrate more theoretical knowledge into practice whilst caring for individuals across the lifespan with a range of conditions and in variety of contemporary health and wellness settings offering different models of care. Final year Bachelor of Nursing students are required to demonstrate competence in clinical practice and be able to apply more advanced decision-making skills in accordance with the NMBA standards of practice.

The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council [ANMAC].

In this placement course students are allocated to a clinical setting and undertake 160 hours of professional experience. Themes for this placement include more advanced therapeutic communication skills and assessment skills, collaborative practice with the interprofessional team, education of individuals and families, critical thinking skills, medication preparation and administration, clinical reflection, and the ability to plan and prioritise patient centred care. This clinical experience enables students to work within a variety of contemporary health care settings, caring for individuals with conditions where they can apply their learning from theoretical and professional nursing practice. To enhance employability there is a focus on the critical capabilities and transferable skills developed through this course that can be deployed in any clinical context. The aim is for students to develop industry-specific knowledge and know-how to effectively manage nursing care within multiple healthcare contexts. Professional identity formation, and maintenance is enhanced through the clinical placement experience. The focus is on developing knowledge, skills, attributes, reflective disposition and identity that graduates need to succeed in the workforce.
