Overview

We live in a world rich in data and statistics, for example in health, sport, or the workplace. In recognition of this paradigm, probability and statistics have taken on an increasing importance within the Australian mathematics curriculum. This has provided a challenge for both new and experienced mathematics teachers who may wish to learn more about the context and content of the curriculum as well as best practice techniques to overcome some misconceptions students may have.

In this minicourse, students will be asked to reflect on the changes to the curriculum, their knowledge of statistics and how it relates to 21st century learning. Statistical language and communication including digital approaches will be considered. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with and learn about existing and new content in the mathematics curriculum from Years 6 to 12.

By working collaboratively and independently, students will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills of teaching statistical content. On completion of the course, students will be confident and aware of contemporary and best practice teaching techniques.
