Overview

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the world governing body for aviation, has mandated that each member country implement rules which require all airlines, airports and other aviation bodies within their jurisdiction, have in place fully integrated safety management systems (SMS). An SMS is a multi-faceted series of initiatives which use data to proactively and reactively manage and promote safety within an organisation. The importance of managing for safety has been re-emphasised in recent years by the ICAO recommendation for aviation operators to implement a safety management system (SMS) based on the published ICAO SMS framework. This course investigates further subject matter that was introduced in AVN1106 (Aviation Safety Systems).

The course facilitates an understanding of the elements of safety management systems as essential aspects in the management of safety and risk within commercial aviation. Having an understanding of the components, processes, principles and management of safety management systems is essential for any manager or supervisor within the aviation system, and useful for all other personnel across the entire organisational spectrum. In the course you will review and further research safety concepts and safety management principles as well as examine the key elements of a safety management system and the associated systems, processes and procedures used in achieving high safety standards in aviation organisations. There will be a strong emphasis on the importance of data driven systems and sound risk management principles.
