This course is the final of five clinical placement courses designed for students seeking a career as medical laboratory scientists. This course provides students with opportunities to apply their theoretical knowledge of clinical biochemistry, transfusion science, histopathology, haematology and/or medical microbiology and immunology and acquire new practical skills in a clinical environment supported by a team of laboratory professionals. It will also provide a forum for investigation and discussion of ongoing professional development and career advancement opportunities, and an exploration of fatigue management skills in preparation for the real-life challenges of a medical laboratory scientist.

The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS).

This course provides students with a final opportunity to apply their specialised theoretical knowledge in a real-world clinical setting in preparation for future employment in a pathology laboratory. Students undertaking this clinical placement will gain organisational, time management and practical skills as they observe and participate in the day-to-day running of an analytical pathology department. This course encourages a reflective approach to the development of the students' workplace skills and will enable the student to make valuable professional connections with laboratory staff, potentially enhancing their future employment prospects.

Students intending to enrol in this course should communicate with the professional placements office well in advance of the first week of the semester so that the process of arranging a suitable placement with a pathology provider can begin. This course is offered in S2.

The normal workload for this course is attendance of 15 days per semester. The details of the clinical placement are negotiated by the professional placements officer to suit the student's requirements and the pathology provider's capacity to accommodate the student. Failure to attend a placement that has been offered by the placements team, and accepted by the student, may result in failure of the course. This statement also applies to the rejection of placements that do not comply with the 精东传媒app's Assessment of Special Circumstances Procedure (13/1150PL).

1. Pathology Clinical placements
Pathology clinical placements are an integral component of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science program. The Pathology Clinical Placements enable students to gain practical experience in a pathology laboratory. Students will be placed in a clinical workplace setting and must therefore be aware of, and comply with, the privacy and confidentiality protocols associated with working in such an environment. Students undertaking pathology clinical placements will be required to complete online induction training mandated by the placement provider and sign deeds relating to placement requirements and privacy. A comprehensive Clinical Placements Guide and information regarding mandatory documents and vaccination requirements, is available on the Medical Laboratory Science Community Hub on 精东传媒appDesk. Students will be responsible for the costs of travel and accommodation associated with clinical placements and for uploading all mandatory documents to InPlace.
