Overview
In LANs (Local Area Networks) and WANs (Wide Area Networks), routers and switches are the basic hardware components. Simple network switches have become ever more capable as technology and computing power has increased, so fundamental knowledge of the basic operations of switches is key to progress for the networking professional. WAN technologies provide connectivity across geographical areas, and are key to extending the reach of networks, and are also integral building block for the Internet as a whole. Though the industry certification is not formally part of this course, students undertaking this course will cover concepts and techniques which are consistent further progress towards the Cisco CCNA industry certification, should they wish to pursue it separately.
This course introduces virtual LANs as a tool to provide segmentation, flexibility and security of LANs. Link redundancy and aggregation are introduced to enhance the robustness of LANs. Network Address Translation is discussed as a method to conserve Internet Protocol Version 4 (ipv4) network address space. It also focuses on WAN technologies which span large geographic areas. After completion of this course, the students will be able to describe and select appropriate WAN technologies; handle switches; routers and wireless routers with confidence.
