Overview
Given the exponentially growing amount of data we increasingly encounter, information retrieval technologies and systems have become very crucial means to help us quickly query and retrieve useful information to support more advanced data analytics and high-level decision-making. Using specific data, valuable knowledge can be generated. Knowledge management represents the process of defining, structuring, retaining, and sharing the knowledge and experience within organisations. In this course, you will learn the methodologies, technologies and systems for the design and implementation of gathering, indexing, and searching information as well as the process of defining, organising and sharing knowledge. This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills of efficiently retrieving targeted information as well as managing high-level knowledge built upon data analytics.
This course will deliver the fundamental concepts, state-of-the-art techniques, and applications in both information retrieval and knowledge management. A variety of teaching & learning approaches and activities will be utilised in the course, where engagement sessions will deliver the lectures covering the fundamental concepts and techniques, while the lab workshops will provide students with opportunities to gain exposure to the systems and applications. Students will also engage in a course project to gain hands-on experiences with information retrieval and knowledge management with real-life applications.
