Overview

Understanding and implementing hydraulic concepts is a fundamental skill of the professional engineer. Water is both an important natural resource and a mechanism for potential damage and failure of engineering assets. This course aims to provide the theoretical background and design skills to enable students to solve practical problems relating to water flow.

This course builds on prior knowledge of fluid mechanics, applying hydraulic engineering principles to pipeline and open channel flow systems. Students are exposed to coastal hydraulics, the characteristics of waves and behaviour of natural streams and rivers. The course will focus on the design of hydraulic structures including both static and momentum forces. Concepts of fluid dynamics are applied to closed conduits including the impacts of pressure transients and pipeline surge. Students will utilise numerical packages to model complex hydraulic systems.
