Overview

The course is the first of four Allied Health courses that fosters the development of skills and knowledge and covers core elements of Allied Health Assistance practice. This course provides an overview of the allied health professions and also provides students with an understanding of the scope of the major health professions in the Australian healthcare settings. Health professions are governed by legislation, codes of conduct, practice guidelines and professional registration and accreditation requirements. In this course, students will develop core professional skills in these areas. The course helps prepare the students to safely practice in both health professional student (on placement) and graduate contexts.

Effective healthcare teams are vital to supporting the needs of clients, especially those with complex conditions or disability. In this course students will be introduced to the allied health professions, with a focus on the role of Allied Health Assistants. All health professionals are expected to manage their practice, their environment, and take care of the people they are working alongside and with. Students will also start to develop competencies required to work in allied health such as managing legal and ethical compliance, following safe work practices, and communication.

This course will utilise a mixture of online learning, tutorials, practical sessions and laboratory sessions. Students will be expected to attend all practical classes, tutorials and laboratory sessions.
