Overview
There is an increased demand for new alternative materials to replace metals for engineering applications. One of the attractive alternatives is the fibre reinforced polymeric composites. Such materials offer very competitive characteristics to the metals in term of weight, cost of manufacturing, and physical and mechanical behaviour. This course is built to prepare students to apply fibre reinforced polymeric composites to address industrial, societal, and environmental needs such as sustainability.
This course deals with the general principles, properties and mechanical performance of fibre reinforced polymeric composites under different loading conditions, including their failure. Students will be able to model and optimise the performance of the composites as well as develop skills in common fabrication techniques. They will conduct laminate analysis to design composite laminates with tailored mechanical responses.
