Overview

We are experiencing the 鈥榝ourth industrial revolution鈥 driven by automation, machine learning and AI, virtual commerce and the 鈥榠nternet of things鈥. To work and thrive in the complex and fluid environments of today鈥檚 organisations, employers need people equipped with soft and behavioural skills. It is easy to overlook the importance of human capabilities in organisations. However, many executives are now reporting that soft and behavioural skills are the critical skills needed within their organisations today, and many are even rating these capabilities as more critical than industry or occupation-specific skills. As we embrace the technological leaps and opportunities that 鈥淚ndustry 4.0鈥 offers, it is essential that we also build our skills as reflective sense-makers, collaborators, and creative problem solvers that modern organisations need. Soft skills and personal capabilities such as teamwork, emotional intelligence, communication and conflict resolution, adaptability, resilience, and complex problem solving are essential inputs for both career and organisational success. In organisational settings, our personal capabilities reach across cultural, geographic, and industry boundaries and connect us in the pursuit of our goals.

In this introductory course, we will discuss the personal, human capabilities that all professionals within organisations need to exhibit to drive both their professional careers and their organisations forward. Concepts covered will include emotional intelligence, ethical business practices and research, collaboration in teams, communication and conflict resolution, problem solving, systems thinking, creativity, and developing a professional identity. The capabilities covered in this course will be reinforced as you journey through the remainder of your study program. As part of this course, you will work collaboratively with others to identify solutions for real world organisational issues. You will engage in reflective practice to consolidate your personal value proposition as a professional within your area of practice and industry that you serve.
