School or Department : School of Business

Course fee schedule : /current-students/administration/fees/fee-schedules

Overview

The purpose of this course is to acquire a set of adaptive leadership skills that help to facilitate adaptive change. In addition, the course will enable students to distinguish between adaptive leadership, absorptive capacity, and other contingency approaches. Students will be able to develop a suite of adaptive leadership knowledge and skills that can be applied to a range of leadership problems across national and global contexts. Adaptive leadership is also about leading self, the team, and the organisation. Accordingly, students will be able to distinguish between relevant team and organisational leadership styles by learning how to adapt their leadership behavior to highly competitive and shifting organisational landscapes. Students will learn why leadership relates to the competition for talent and other adaptive challenges and why adaptive skills result in leadership success. Importantly, the course requires learners to be able to communicate adaptive change to a range of organisational stakeholders.

This introductory course covers multiple leadership themes including adaptation versus exploration knowledge, authentic and collective leadership plus team-based and other organisational leadership styles. The aim of the course is to help learners develop their individual adaptive leadership capability by enabling them to change their leadership approach to suit changing organisational contexts. Here, we discuss why different organisational leadership scenarios require more individual and adaptive team responses. You will acquire critical skills related to `doing' leadership as distinct from learning `about' leadership. You will also examine how to solve organisational leadership issues across national and international contexts and be able to communicate leadership changes to key stakeholders. The course requires you to record the events, experiences, and observations of adaptive leaders. Moreover, you will have the chance to apply problem solving skills to scenario-based tasks, and to communicate your thoughts and feelings by reflecting on a range of leadership events.
