This course aims to provide students with a basic level of guitar playing skills from which to build an ongoing practice. In addition to examining the key recordings and literatures of the instrument, students will explore the instrument through basic, practical instruction in various popular styles.

Through an introduction to the basic performance practices of the instrument, students examine the guitar's techniques and literatures, its place within 20th century music, and its cultural significance.

Students will learn basic styles of guitar accompaniment and melody playing, and explore through playing the role of the guitar in a range of 20th century styles - folk, blues, popular and contemporary styles.

Through listening to representative recordings, reading of key texts in the guitar cultures literature, and practical in-class and online playing instruction, students will develop their own creative practice on the instrument.
