Overview

Health promotion, defined as the 鈥榩rocess of enabling people to increase control over, and improve their health鈥 (Health Promotion Glossary, 1998), is one of the foundational components and actions of public health practitioners. This course will equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop, implement and evaluate health promotion initiatives at a local, national and international level. By the end of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of global principles and action areas for public health promotion. The course content and outcomes are informed by the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions of Australia (CAPHIA) guidelines for public health graduate areas of practice and related practice goals.

Public health practitioners are well-placed, and in some cases tasked with advocating for improved health. This course will equip students with an understanding of advocacy strategies that can be applied in local and international settings. The fundamentals of a systems-based theory and related methods approach health outcomes will be explored. This course will integrate knowledge on the determinants of health to inform public health initiatives and campaigns. By the end of this course, students will be equipped to develop and evaluate health promotion initiatives in settings such as schools, workplaces, mass media and policy, at a local, state, national and global context.
