Overview

An important outcome of study at the Masters level is that learners should be able to plan and execute independent research which consolidates, builds upon and applies the capabilities developed through their program of study. A 'capstone' research course undertaken at, or towards, the end of the program is a suitable instrument for demonstrating these capabilities. This two unit research course enables students to synthesise the knowledge and skills developed in earlier courses of their program, into an approved research topic focused on key aspects of their areas of interest/specialisation. Students develop appropriate research skills and specialist knowledge which will enhance their career prospects and prepare them to undertake further studies in research.

Learners will, with guidance from the course examiner, plan and execute an independent piece of research which is clearly related to their overall program of study. Most topics will be drawn from either the candidate's work experience and/or areas of interest. This two-unit research course is intended to meet the needs of learners who wish to include a research component in their Masters program by providing a venue in which research can be undertaken to apply and/or extend knowledge developed in their program of study. The research must reflect mastery of the content of current literature and of knowledge and skills developed by the learner in his/her prior program. To successfully complete the course, students will be required to carry out supervised research on their chosen topic using an appropriate research method, present a research paper for examination and defend the results at an appropriate scholarly standard. This course will operate on the basis of frequent individual consultation and feedback between the student and course leader. The course examiner will provide advice and feedback on the development of a suitable topic building on the work undertaken in the prerequisite courses RSH8000 Introduction to Research and RSH8001 Research Methods.
