Program focus

This program gives students the opportunity to develop the skills to manage publishing projects. Students develop a firm understanding of the theoretical, legal, ethical and practical elements of editing and publishing. Upon completion of this diploma at credit level or better, graduates are eligible to apply for enrolment in the Master level of study.

Program aims

The program aims to produce graduates who have developed:

• a high degree of understanding of the theoretical, ethical, legal and practical elements of professional editing and publishing, and of the management of publishing projects

• a high level of intellectual and practical skills to apply knowledge in professional practice.

Program objectives

On successful completion of the program students will:

• be able to demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of design concepts, technical skills, legal and ethical constraints, and editorial processes in the publishing environment

• be able to apply theoretical understanding and decision-making processes in the planning, production, editing and coordination of publication of work to professional standards

• be able to demonstrate possession of the skills required to publish to a professional standard

• demonstrate a knowledge of the principles and issues in editing and publishing

• have acquired either:

  • appropriate skills in research methodology,

  • basic web publishing skills

  • contextual theoretical knowledge relevant to modern communication.

Admission requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing are completion of a Bachelor degree in any recognised tertiary field, or equivalent, at pass level or above. Applicants may be accepted for commencement in semester 2 and should enrol in and/or their elective course.

Program structure

The Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing consists of eight units. The first four units (equal to the Graduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing ) focus on print or text based publishing while the second four units focus on management and/or multimedia publishing.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 4 years to complete this program.

Students will also require regular access to email and the World Wide Web.

Students studying courses with multimedia, journalism, public relations and media production content may be expected to work in basic HTML, and/or programs such as Adobe PageMaker, Photoshop, Premier, Macromedia Director and Quark XPress or similar software. Please note, not all courses may teach how to use these advanced applications. However, students are welcome to work in these programs at their own discretion and may require a higher minimum computer configuration to do so. Students taking Multimedia Studies courses should normally have knowledge of web design programs such as FrontPage and Dreamweaver.
