Program focus

This program gives students the opportunity to further develop their skills and understanding of the theoretical, legal, ethical and practical elements of editing and publishing and of publishing management. 精东传媒app consists of both coursework and two multimedia management courses.

Program aims

The program aims to produce graduates who:

• have developed a high degree of understanding of the theoretical, ethical, legal and practical elements of professional editing and publishing and of the management of publishing projects

• have developed a high level of intellectual and practical skills to apply knowledge in professional practice, and either

• will be able to conceive, plan, research and execute a project requiring research, scholarship, composition and interpretation of a high level, or

• will be able to demonstrate a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of multimedia studies.

Program objectives

On successful completion of the program students will:

• be able to demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of design concepts, technical skills, legal and ethical constraints, and editorial processes in the publishing environment

• be able to apply theoretical understanding and decision-making processes in the planning, production, editing and coordination of publication of work to professional standards

• be able to demonstrate possession of skills required to publish to professional standards

• be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the principles and issues in editing and publishing;

• have acquired either:

  • appropriate skills in research methodology

  • basic web publishing skills

  • contextual theoretical knowledge relevant to modern communication

  
  

• have developed skills and competence in either:

  • conceiving, planning, researching and executing a dissertation requiring research, scholarship, composition and interpretation at an advanced level

  • multimedia publishing

Admission requirements

Applicants for admission to the Master of Editing and Publishing by dissertation must have successfully completed all the courses in the Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing (including an approved course in Research Methodology) with a grade point average 4.6 out of 7 (i.e. credit level) or better.

Program structure

The Master of Editing and Publishing is a three-year, part-time program taken by external study. It requires one year of part-time study after satisfying the requirements of the two year part-time Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing. The Master of Editing and Publishing may also be taken over two years by taking three courses per semester.

The Master of Editing and Publishing is a 12 unit program that requires the completion of either a four unit dissertation or two courses of two units each in multimedia studies (or four units of related courses) after completing the eight unit coursework requirements of the Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing. The Masters degree requires completion of at least four units of courses at 8000 level (including )

Students have a maximum of 6 years to complete this program.

IT requirements

The following minimum computer configuration is recommended: Intel Pentium, Power Mac or equivalent; 64Mb RAM; 4Gb hard disk; DVD drive; sound card; video display card capable of displaying more than 256 colours; Windows 98, Macintosh system 8.6 or later operating system; 56kb modem. Students will also require regular access to email and the Internet.

Students studying units with multimedia, journalism, public relations, and media production content may be expected to work in basic HTML, and/or programs such as Adobe PageMaker, Photoshop, Premier, Macromedia Director, and Quark XPress or similar software. Please note, not all courses may teach how to use these advanced applications. However, students are welcome to work in these programs at their own discretion and may require a higher minimum computer configuration to do so.

Applicants who have completed a Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing or similar program at another university may apply for up to six units of exemptions from the 12 units of the Master of Editing and Publishing at the 精东传媒app of Southern Queensland.
