Professional accreditation

The Master of Information Systems program is accredited at professional level by the and, through the Seoul Accord, is recognised in other countries.

USQ is registered with the (PMI)庐 as a Global Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.). A study of project management at USQ earns professional development units towards certification with PMI including towards the Project Management Professional (PMP)庐.

PMI and PMP are registered marks of the Project Management Institute, Inc.

USQ is also endorsed by the (AIPM) as a National Course Provider for project management education.

Program aims

The Master of Information Systems is a vocationally and academically oriented program which allows graduates from programs other than computing to gain skills and knowledge in key areas of computing which relate to their needs and the needs of their profession or industry. It aims to produce graduates who are managers in IT departments. The Master of Project Management aims to produce graduates who have the appropriate skills and knowledge to be capable of managing small, medium and large-sized projects as either a senior team leader, a project manager or project director.

Program objectives

The Master of Information Systems aims to produce graduates who are able to:

• acquire specific knowledge and skills in information technology which are relevant to their disciplines and careers

• understand a broad range of topics in information technology

• design, manage and develop software systems in an effective manner

• lead discussions relating to the computing aspects of their workplace

• become better problem-solvers and innovative thinkers, who are able to learn new skills independently and efficiently and consequently to succeed in a competitive professional environment

• identify information needs appropriate to their area of specialisation, and apply the techniques required to gather and interpret such information

• demonstrate skills in the analysis and determination of technological issues at management level

• identify, analyse and solve problems in one or more areas of technology by selecting and using either quantitative or qualitative techniques appropriate to the resolution of technological problems

• satisfy academic admission requirements for membership of relevant professional bodies

• identify, interpret and evaluate major issues in a range of contemporary business information technology areas

• apply acquired knowledge associated with the studies to work environments

• articulate the principal theories, concepts and applications associated with the selected business information technology area(s)

• understand and act in accordance with the ethics of their profession.

The Master of Project Management aims to produce graduates who are able to:

• demonstrate underlying knowledge of the theoretical structure of project management as defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge

• demonstrate essential skills in relation to identification and analysis of logistics management, and integrate logistics management into the overall operation of the organisation

• apply the theoretical principles of project management to a project environment in relation to project:

  • scheduling and time management

  • cost management

  • quality management

  • human resources management

  • communications management

  • risk management

  • procurement management

  • integration management

  • scope management

  
  

• apply management skills acquired through elective courses in the context of project management.

Admission requirements

Candidates for entry into the Master of Information Systems and Master of Project Management must meet each of the following criteria:

• an introductory knowledge of computing consistent with that found in

• a minimum of two years full-time equivalent work experience

• hold one of the following:

  1. a bachelor's degree, a three-year diploma from a recognised institution, or an approved equivalent qualification in an area other than computing

  2. Graduate Diploma of Business (ends S3 2014) (Information Systems) or an approved equivalent qualification

Program structure

The Master of Information Systems and the Master of Project Management double degree is made up of 16 courses:

• 12 courses from the Master of Information Systems (ends 2014)

• 4 core courses from the Master of Project Management (ends 2014) .

Exit points

A student who chooses not to complete or who does not maintain good standing in this program will be permitted to exit with a lesser qualification as set out below, provided that they have met the requirements of that program.

• A student who successfully completes 8 units may, upon application, exit with a Graduate Diploma of Business (ends S3 2014). A student who successfully completes all requirements for the Graduate Certificate of Business (ends S3 2014) may, upon application, exit with that qualification.

• A student who successfully completes 12 courses from the Master of Information Systems may, upon application, exit with a Master of Information Systems (ends 2014).

Credit

Credit may be granted on the basis of equivalent courses undertaken at postgraduate level. A double degree is required to meet the requirements of each degree studied with a maximum of 50% credit for each program studied individually.

This double degree meets the requirements of the 12-unit Master of Information Systems (ends 2014) and the eight-unit Master of Project Management (ends 2014). The two programs together require the completion of 20 units, including the possibility of 10 units of credit with up to six units of credit from the Master of Information Systems (ends 2014) and four from the Master of Project Management (ends 2014). The structure of this double degree has been designed to include the cross-allocation of four units of credit leaving students the possibility of a further six units of credit.

In order for credit to be granted, the claim must meet the following specific requirements:

• the course passed was taken at least at Masters or equivalent level

• the course was passed within 5 years prior to the application (courses up to 10 years old may be considered if evidence is provided that the applicant has been employed in that field)

• the course passed is equivalent in objectives, content and weightings to a course prescribed in the program, or alternatively, the course is suitable as an elective

• where the student has taken out an award from a recognised tertiary institution and is claiming credit on the basis of courses completed to meet the requirements of that program, the maximum credit on the basis of such courses shall be one-half of the total courses for the program

• credit approved in this program will not automatically apply to other programs offered by the USQ.

Note: Where credit is granted, maximum and minimum duration will be adjusted in the same proportion as the credit, e.g. where the maximum of 50 per cent credit is granted, maximum and minimum duration will be reduced by one-half.
