Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Human Services (Counselling major) is fully accredited by the (PACFA). PACFA is a peak body that represents the majority of counselling associations throughout Australia.

The Bachelor of Human Services (Health and Social Wellbeing major) – students who complete 400 hrs of professional placement will have completed a program accredited by the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) (application pending).

Program aims

This program aims to provide an enhanced understanding of the basic issues and principles in the community sector together with skills and theoretical frameworks for people interested in becoming human services professionals in the community sector. Particular major and minor studies will focus on competencies required for these roles. The program affords the opportunity to engage in specialised study of marginalised groups.

Program objectives

On successful completion of the program students should be able to demonstrate:

  • professional skills and understanding of the key issues appropriate for working in the community sector

  • broad and coherent knowledge of professional and contextual issues in counselling and welfare

  • an ability to communicate in a range of forms, including formal and informal, oral and written

  • the ability to work in teams

  • research skills appropriate for working in human services

  • coherent theoretical knowledge of community development and welfare based on social justice/human rights perspective from within Australia, and globally

  • competence in the specified aims and objectives of their chosen major

  • theoretical knowledge of the environmental, economic and social context with in-depth knowledge of issues of sustainability, equity, and justice.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 07. Graduates at this level will have broad and coherent knowledge and skills for professional work and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

Students will normally have completed year 12 or equivalent with a satisfactory achievement in English. Overall Position (or its equivalent) will be used as a general basis for selection.

Students must have a Blue Card issued by the Commission of Children and Young People and Child Guardian in Queensland or its respective interstate equivalent to enrol in and . These courses must be satisfactorily completed in order to graduate with a major in Counselling.

Health and Social Wellbeing major - Student requirements for Placement. Students must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the ľ«¶«´«Ă˝app of Southern Queensland for placement. These include:

  1. a current Australian Federal Police Criminal History Check Certificate

  2. a current Blue Card from the Queensland Government Commission for Children and Young People and Young Guardian


All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

Program fees

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of your higher education and you as a student pay a , which varies depending on the courses undertaken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the .

Program structure

The program comprises 24 units including 8 core courses/units and one of the following combinations:

  • one 12 unit major (counselling only) and one 4 unit minor or

  • one 12 unit major (counselling or Health and Social Wellbeing) and 4 electives or

  • one 8 unit major, one 4 unit minor and 4 electives or

  • one 8 unit major and two 4 unit minors or

  • one 8 unit major and 8 electives or

  • two 8 unit majors*

The Bachelor of Human Services is a multidisciplinary program that incorporates existing courses from the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Sciences, and the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.

Important notes about Residential Schools (Counselling Major):

To gain eligibility for membership in a Psychotherapy & Counselling Federation of Australia counselling association (PACFA) students need to ensure they have met the minimum face to face tuition requirements for , , , , , and by attending the course residential schools.

Attendance at the for , , , , , and is strongly recommended. Attendance will be recorded to enable the student to demonstrate that they meet a proportion of the required number of hours of face-to-face instruction/tuition for eligibility to join a PACFA affiliate upon graduation.

Students in the counselling major who cannot attend the Residential School may apply to attend the following year, may consider transferring to BHMS (Child and Family) or another major, or stay within the program and potentially graduate without eligibility for PACFA membership.

Requirements to complete the Health and Social Wellbeing major

Students will be eligible to graduate from the Bachelor of Human Services (Health and Social Wellbeing) following satisfactory completion of all theoretical and fieldwork components of the program. Some courses have compulsory attendance requirements and to satisfy the placement courses students must participate in the required hours of placement offered at off-campus venues and satisfactorily demonstrate the learning objectives of the course.

Health and Social Wellbeing major (12 units)

Health and Social Wellbeing major aims

The Health and Social Wellbeing major aims to meet current and future needs associated with promoting and maintaining a healthy society. It will prepare individuals to be designers of services for older people and people with a disability. This degree prepares graduates for leadership roles as health and wellbeing focused professionals in government and community, and health and social care organisations. Graduates will possess a range of skills to work in aged care, rehabilitation, and disability settings.

Health and Social Wellbeing major Objectives:

  1. Identify and examine concepts and theories related to health assessment, professional practice, health practices, and social wellbeing;

  2. Develop communication and collaboration skills and cultural competencies within individual, group and organisational contexts;

  3. Critically analyse and evaluate information to develop knowledge, make decisions and solve problem;

  4. Develop reflective skills to identify strengths and limitations and respond proactively to different situations;

  5. Identify and apply professional, legal and ethical principles, practices and policies;

  6. Develop fundamental research skills to ensure application of evidence based practice;

  7. Evaluate theories and models of practice to identify the requirements and optimise the management of older people and those with a disability.

Minor Studies

Minor studies are designed to enable students to widen their knowledge and perspectives, or to complement their choice of major. Courses must be taken over two levels and should be in the same discipline or recognised multi-disciplinary area – please refer to the Minor studies section of this Handbook. Enrolment requirements must be satisfied for any course selected.

For students intending to study the Psychology Minor: there is a requirement to select four courses that are not already included in the BHMS core or the chosen major.

Practical experience

Health and Social Wellbeing major

Students must complete (110 hours) and which includes 200 hours of placement in Year 3 in the human services, health, disability and aged care sectors. Students will need appropriate police checks, and may require proof of immunisation status according to the sector and geographical jurisdiction of the host organisation.

Students interested in professional accreditation must also complete HSW2299 Fieldwork Placement B which includes 90 hours of placement in Year 2.

The Professional Placements Office at USQ will use established protocols and guidelines, approved by both USQ and our partner services. This program will develop protocols in consultation with other relevant disciplines who manage placements.

Students also need to be aware that placement can sometimes be in metropolitan and/or rural and remote settings away from their home campus and include shift and weekend work.

Clinical requirements

Practical and/or clinical experience will be undertaken as part of the program. Students will negotiate supervised industry placement where they will have to demonstrate competency in those components of the course (s) which require application in a community or human services situation.

Students undertaking practical and/or clinical experience are responsible for their own transport to and from their clinical placements and are also responsible for their own safety in organising that transport, whether public or private. Students are expected to hold a current drivers’ licence if driving themselves, and their vehicle must be registered and appropriately insured if they are driving their own vehicle.

Students must have a Blue Card issued by the Blue Card Services Public Safety Business Agency in Queensland or its respective interstate equivalent to enrol in and . These courses must be satisfactorily completed in order to graduate with a major in Counselling.

The Diploma in Community Welfare and Development will articulate into the Bachelor of Human Services program provided students have completed the following eight courses: , , , (students cannot study both CDS2000 and within the one degree), , plus two electives.

Students in the Health and Social Wellbeing major may articulate to the 4 year Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) (BHSH) program prior to successful completion of the BHMS, noting that to articulate into the fourth year of the (BHSH) students must have a minimum GPA of 5.0 or permission from the program coordinator.
