Program aims

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) with a major in Clinical Exercise Physiology aims to allow students to develop or extend their knowledge and expertise to meet personal achievement goals or provide for career opportunities within the health, sports and fitness industry such as sports coaches, exercise physiologists, sports development officers, sports performance directors or a range of other roles. The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) (Clinical Exercise Physiology) specifically provides for graduates to obtain ESSA qualification as an accredited exercise physiologist.

Program objectives

On completion of the program graduates will be able to:

1. Apply proficient levels of discipline knowledge and skills relevant to health, exercise and fitness across the lifespan of an individual.

2. Compare and contrast exercise related issues and circumstances of individuals and groups, including sports performers and those with disabilities, chronic diseases and from a range of age groups across the lifespan of an individual.

3. Apply highly-developed practical skills relevant to laboratory, clinical and field situations in the sport and exercise area.

4. Display evidence-based practice, good communication skills, professional development and research.

5. Critically analyse levels of safe, professional and ethical practice displayed in interactions with clients from a range of populations, and a variety of contexts, across the lifespan of an individual.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

• Have achieved a minimum Overall Position (OP) 12, tertiary entrance rank 75 or equivalent qualification.^

• Subject Pre-requisite: English (4,SA) or equivalent.

• English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 3.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a ¾«¶«´«Ã½app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Practical experience is an integral component of the program and each student is required to undertake and satisfactorily complete 500 hours of practical experience.

Progression into practical courses is dependent upon a pass grade in theoretical and other practical courses which have been set as prerequisites.

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app of Southern Queensland and Queensland Health for practical placement. Please refer to the applicable for Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) Students.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) (Clinical Exercise Physiology) is structured with:

• 10 specific clinical exercise physiology related courses.

Requirements to complete the Program:

Admission into the 4th year of the program is contingent upon students having completed the first 3 years of the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) as well as maintaining an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 in all courses completed across years 1 to 3 of the program. Please note: For students who fail to meet these requirements, please refer to the Exit Point section.

To be eligible to graduate, students must have completed 32 courses and met the requirements of the program.

Residential schools

For all modes there will be on-campus and practical attendance requirements for some courses. For some courses external student attendance at identified residential school is necessary to complete the course. In order to successfully complete the program students must be able to fulfil practical attendance requirements of a one week residential school in Years 1 and 2 and a one week residential school twice yearly in Year 3 and 4. Residential schools are arranged at the most convenient times for most students and, depending on the course, may be offered at the Toowoomba or Ipswich campuses.

Exit points

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) (Clinical Exercise Physiology) will have the following exit points:

Those students who fail to maintain an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 in all courses across years 1 to 3 of the program will not be permitted to enrol in the fourth year of the program and will be exited from the degree. Those students will graduate with a BSES Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. Please note: Students who wish to exit under the Sport and Exercise Science major will need to meet the Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) requirements. This requirement will mean the completion of three required courses in Level 3 that are not part of the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours) program.

Students who complete 24 approved courses can exit with a BSES Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science (Applied Sport and Exercise major). Students who complete 16 approved courses can exit with an (ADSE).

Students who complete 8 approved courses can exit with a (DSES).

Students are able to enrol in any offered mode of a course (on-campus, external or online), regardless of the program mode of study they enrolled in.

Note: The enrolment pattern outlined provides the opportunity for students to seek reverse articulation to a nominated service provider (AFB) for a Certificate III in Fitness after the completion of the first year of study. Additional requirements of a First Aid Certificate and CPR qualification are required. Some short course or other requirements independent of university courses may in some cases need to be completed.
