Overview

  • Are you a UniSQ Bachelor of Social Work student wishing to extend yourself and your career with the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)? After successful completion of your first two years of the Bachelor of Social Work, you may enter the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours).
  • Providing you meet the entry requirements, Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) students will be given credit for all courses completed in Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Social Work. You will carry on to complete an additional two years, with research embedded.
  • Students undertaking Honours must complete an independent research project. There are trio of courses related to the research. These three courses are undertaken in Year 3 and Year 4 of this degree.
  • In an uncertain world, social workers have a key role to play – from working with individuals, assisting a family, working alongside a community group or advocating for social justice. 
  • Become a practice-ready graduate social work practitioner and be a catalyst for change, dedicated to achieving social justice, inclusion and wellbeing.

Further study 

Completion of the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) may enable you to enter a PhD. 

Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Social Work is accredited with the  (AASW) under the (ASWEAS). UniSQ graduates from the Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) will be eligible to apply for membership of the AASW. 

Career outcomes

  • Graduate with the knowledge, skills and an ethical practice framework that enables you to deliver social work services in areas such as child protection, youth justice, domestic and family violence, mental health services, disability support, hospitals and health care, sexual assault services, asylum seekers and refugee support, community services and schools. 
  • Social Work leads to careers in agencies and services that provide opportunities for working with individuals and families in the community but your degree will also enable you to work towards societal change through advocacy, policy development and evaluation, and legislative input.
  • While honours graduates can still practice as social workers in chosen fields of practice; an honours degree demonstrates high academic achievement. Having a Bachelor Social Work (Honours) can provide a pathway for further research either in regard to employment or additional study. This degree gives you prerequisite research skills to undertake a higher research degree.

Entry requirements

You are able to enrol into the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at the end of your second year of the Bachelor of Social Work. Enrolment depends upon meeting the following four criteria: 

  • successful completion of the first two years of the Bachelor of Social Work; 
  • your GPA is 5.0 or higher; 
  • your research involves low risk ethics or no need for an ethics proposal; and
  • a supervisor can be matched to the research project.

If these four requirements are met Bachelor of Social Work students may be invited to enrol in the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) from Year 3. 

Inherent requirements

There are inherent requirements that must be met in order to successfully complete this degree. Inherent requirements are fundamental skills, capabilities and knowledge that students must be able to demonstrate in order to achieve the essential learning outcomes of the degree, while maintaining the academic integrity of the degree. Please read and understand the inherent requirements specific to the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) before applying.

If you think you may experience any problems meeting inherent requirements, you can talk to a Student Equity Officer about reasonable adjustments that may be put in place to assist you. Any reasonable adjustments made must not fundamentally change the nature of the inherent requirement.

Tafe (VET) qualification

If you have completed a qualification from a TAFE or qualified private provider, you may be able to use these qualifications to meet UniSQ's entry requirements.

Work and life experience

You may be able to use your work experience and other adjustment factors to increase your selection rank and meet UniSQ's entry requirements.

English language requirements

To meet the English language requirements for this degree, we accept the minimum English language proficiency scores from one of the following tests. Your test must be completed within two years of applying to UniSQ.

IELTS (Academic)

Minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Pearson Test of English

Minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills - listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
 TOEFL iBT Minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test: 24 for listening and reading; 27 for writing; 23 for speaking.

Additional requirements for placements

All students must provide the following documents prior to commencing field education courses:

  • Blue Card or Working with Children Check
  • Yellow Card (if working with people with disabilities)
  • Australian Police Certificate.

You must also provide the following immunisation evidence prior to commencing placements:

  • Hepatitis B immunisation evidence
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella immunisation evidence
  • Varicella immunisation evidence
  • Pertussis immunisation evidence
  • Influenza immunisation evidence
  • Tuberculosis Risk Assessment
  • COVID-19 vaccinations as directed by health services.

To complete this degree students must complete 32 units. To study full-time you would usually complete 4 units per semester.

Professional experience / placements

You will be required to participate in two 500-hour industry-based placements. Typically taken in the later years of your degree, you will be mentored and supervised by an experienced social worker in a chosen field of practice. You could be placed in a wide range of government and non-government agencies, from child and youth Mental Health Services, emergency department in a hospital, domestic and family violence services, first nations services or child safety services.

Residential schools

You will be required to attend 5 days of residential workshops each year of the degree, totalling 20 days of face-to-face residential workshops. This is a requirement of the external accrediting body – Australian Association of Social Workers.

What will I learn in a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)?
A Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) will extend the knowledge you acquired in the Bachelor of Social Work.
