Which Professional Engineering major is right for me?

With the ability to choose from many specialisations, you can explore your passion for Engineering in so many ways with a Masters of Professional Engineering. It can be helpful to reflect on your professional experience and what specifically your passionate about when choosing your specialisation. Once you identify what you love and your goals, it will make your decision easier when it comes to selecting your degree.

Aerospace Engineering - A Masters in Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent) will equip you with the skills needed to help improve green and fuel-efficient technologies. Examine airworthiness and flight handling in normal and emergency situations by developing rockets and spacecrafts, aircraft or aerospace equipment.

Agricultural Engineering - With an emphasis on practical experience and industry relevant courses, you will complete 60 days of industry experience and a research project, preparing you for your career in agricultural engineering.

Civil Engineering - An ideal stepping stone if you hold a 3-year engineering degree but have limited work experience. Enhance your research skills with a research project or dissertation and have the opportunity to use your Masters of Civil Engineering qualification as a springboard for further research degrees.

Electrical & Electronic Engineering - Whether this is the exploration of signalling devices for road and rail or the most efficient transmission of power, renewable energy or energy storage, a Masters in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) research project will provide you with insight into the profession of an Electrical and Electronic Engineer.

Engineering Management & Enterprise - What you will learn during a Masters in Engineering Management qualification will vary depending on where you choose to study. At UniSQ an Engineering Mangement & Enterprise specialisation with equip you with the skills to lead complex engineering projects and teams, as well as develop your entrepreneurial skills.

Mechanical Engineering - When you study a postgraduate Mechanical Engineering course or Masters in Mechanical Engineering, you will learn about advanced principals of dynamics, renewable energy technology, fibre-reinforced composites, system design and fluid mechanics. 

Structural Engineering - Whether this is permanent affordable housing for developing countries or performance testing of concrete, your project will gain the skills and knowledge needed to provide insight to the profession of a Structural Engineer.

What will I learn in a Master of Professional Engineering?

What you will learn when you study a Masters of Professional Engineering will vary significantly depending on the specialisation you choose. 

At UniSQ our Master of Professional Engineering qualification consists of 16 courses which include:

  • six core courses
  • six specialisation courses
  • four selective courses.

You will also put your learnings into practice by attending residential schools. This provides you with the opportunity to experience hands-on practical activities, attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials, use facilities, and meet academics and other students. You may need to attend residential schools at various times through the year (typically in the mid-semester break) and be away from home for days or a few weeks at a time.

In addition to the hands-on laboratory sessions and 60 days industry experience, you will complete a research project and dissertation applying all your formal knowledge to a real-world problem. 

Is the Masters of Professional Engineering accredited?

Yes! The only exceptions are Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Management & Enterprise specialisation.

The other seven Master of Professional Engineering specialisations have been accorded full accreditation at the level of Professional Engineer by and graduates are eligible for Graduate membership at the Professional Level. 

What are the entry requirements for a Masters of Professional Engineering?

The entry requirements for a Masters of Professional Engineering degree will vary depending on which university you choose. At UniSQ you'll need: 

  • An Australian university three or four-year Bachelor degree in engineering in the relevant specialisation, or equivalent. 
    or 
  • Completion of an Australian university 4-year bachelor degree in engineering in a non-related specialisation, or equivalent.
  • To meet the relevant inherent requirements.

You may also be eligible for advance standing entry if you’ve completed an Australian university 4-year embedded honours degree in engineering in the same or closely related cognate specialisation (major).

Are flexible study options available?

The different ways you can study a Master of Professional Engineering will vary from uni to uni but at UniSQ, yes you can study your degree part-time, on-campus or externally, allowing you to balance study with your work and life commitments.
