Kathryn's journey is a testament to the power of following a passion. As a valedictorian of UniSQ, Kathryn's career change from law to counselling has been nothing short of inspiring.
Kathryn spent years working as a solicitor, barrister, and in-house counsel, supporting victims and survivors of abuse. It was during this time that she realised she wanted to help in a more meaningful way. She decided to make a significant career shift, driven by her passion for supporting people through their most challenging times.
Enrolling in the Master of Counselling at UniSQ was a life changing move for Kathryn. The degree offered her the opportunity to delve into areas such as interpersonal trauma, perinatal psychology, and vicarious trauma. Her dedication and hard work paid off, as she graduated with distinction and was honored as the valedictorian of the Health & Community ceremony, thanks to her perfect GPA.
Kathryn's experience at UniSQ was enriched by the practical and engaging courses. She now runs her own private practice, Mindsmith Wellness, based in Toowoomba. Offering services in-person, online, and via telephone, Kathryn is now able to participate more meaningfully in her clients' healing journeys.
“I've had an excellent experience - wonderful lectures, plus interesting and practical subjects. The counselling course has a lot of role-playing assessments and other activities that are really helpful for developing the skills that I use everyday in my job.”
In her valedictory speech, Kathryn emphasised the importance of courage, self-care, and compassion. She encouraged her fellow graduates to learn from their failures and view them as steps toward growth. Kathryn's journey is a powerful reminder that we are not defined by our worst moments but by how we choose to move forward.
Looking ahead, Kathryn is excited about the future. She plans to continue expanding her skillset as a registered counsellor and is even considering pursuing a PhD. Her time at UniSQ has not only equipped her with the knowledge and skills needed for her new career but has also instilled in her a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment.
