Information Technology has become essential to the operation of any business today. The management of Information and Communications Technology requires significant skills and an assortment of different frameworks in order to support the efficient functioning of information and communications technology in support of an organisations mission, vision and goals.

Synopsis

This course provides an overview of the role of Information Technology within an organisation and the different functions it performs to aid an organisation. Students will be introduced to the different frameworks, which are necessary to manage and maintain Information Technology. The course will cover different governance, development and operational activities with the necessary skills required to support these different processes. In addition to the different frameworks, the course also introduces some of the common compliance and standards Information Technology departments generally adhere such as ISO 27001 and The Privacy Act. The different roles and responsibilities are discussed in regards to the way in which they contribute to Information Technology.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. critically examine Information Technology as a business in the context of IT Management environments;
  2. synthesize a range of Information Technology processes associated with Enterprise IT Management;
  3. analyse how Information Technology contributes to strategy;
  4. compare and contrast services provided by Information Technology within the context of an organisation;
  5. enact change through portfolios and projects;
  6. synthesise and articulate governance and reporting of Information Technology.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them, to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    An open examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.
