Rationale
This course builds upon the content covered in CMG4003 for high-rise, commercial and industrial construction management processes, techniques and systems. It is important for construction students to have an understanding of the business side of the industry in addition to construction project management issues. The viability of a construction company is not only dependent on the successful completion of individual projects - on time, on budget and to the required quality and safety standards - but also requires the careful analysis and management of business finances, marketing, productivity and performance, human resources, supply chain and project process.
Having an understanding of the factors that influence the success of a company will give students a greater appreciation of the business decisions made by management which impact on their role and project.
Synopsis
This course examines construction project management and focusses on the functional, managerial and business issues impacting the nature of a problem and the problem solving approaches to address project performance and management. Students will work together as part of a team on tasks exploring a wide range of construction project management and performance topics. These include:
. Project scope development
. Analysis of project alternatives from a business point of view
. Identifying and assessing performance criteria
. The role of teamwork and decision making in formulating and pursuing achievable strategies
. The impact of proper planning on organisational and project performance
. Apply construction and project management theory and knowledge areas to a real world situation
Each team will take on the roles required to complete the tasks and undertake an oral and written presentation to a professional standard and project report to the client that will address the relevant issues.
This course contains a mandatory residential school.
Objectives
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Effectively function as a member of a team, taking both leadership and team member roles, which facilitates the open sharing of knowledge and information with other team members;
- Develop a feasibility analysis to determine the best options from a business management perspective;
- Analyse project productivity and be able to identify and assess various techniques that can be used to evaluate the project productivity;
- Develop a project management plan focussing on identification and evaluation of project objectives, scope, schedule plan, cost plan, site safety plan, quality plan and execution, risk management plan and project delivery methods;
- Interpret, read, analyse and communicate findings for a project plan; and
- Communicate effectively to a professional standard by a group presentation of a client focused project report.

Students must attend the mandatory residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item. -

As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade. -
