Rationale

Networks are of an increasing importance in commerce, education and culture and absorb an ever-increasing share of the national budget as there is an expectation that we will be able to connect to any online environment through a medium of our choice at any location. This course will provide students with the knowledge to model protocols and standards used in networks and wireless communication systems and how to ensure continuity of service. This course will equip students with the insight needed for a career in communications technology.

Synopsis

This course focuses on wireless communication technology as used in mobile phone networks, including 4G and 5G and the series of standards associated with wireless local area networks. Students will also investigate the quality of service in the Internet with a focus on the DiffServ standard and use a graphical interface to gain an understanding of these topics. The final topic covered is optical communications, looking at the capacity of optical fibres and associated switching technologies.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be:

  1. Calculate the capacity of wireless and optical systems according to the Shannon formula;
  2. Model distortion and noise in wireless communication systems and the methods used to overcome it;
  3. Model interference between co-located wireless communication systems and different methods used to overcome it;
  4. Simulate or model and analyse the throughput, performance, and fairness of wireless, optical and tcp/ip systems
  5. Make appropriate choices of configuration of wireless security;
  6. Model networks which carry multiple traffic types with different quality of service requirements and the methods used to cater for them;
  7. Model the use of wave-division multiplexing and switching in optical systems and how it can be used to deliver increasing demand for services in future.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

    Requirements after S1 2020:
    To complete each of the assignments satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for that item. Satisfactory completion of the exam requires at least 40% of the available marks.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    Requirements after S1 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the weighted marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination

    Requirements after S1 2020:
    In a Restricted Examination, candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments as well as a non-programmable calculator into the examination.

Assessment notes

  1. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.

  2. Students may be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to the USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request to do so.

  3. In accordance with ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Policy, the Examiner of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

  4. Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in a course but who have failed to meet some of the specified objectives of a course within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IM (Incomplete - Make up). An IM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the examiner, a student will be able to achieve the remaining objectives of the course after a period of non directed personal study.
