Rationale

The Academic Reading and Writing course aims to develop students' language skills in preparation for EAPII. This course will introduce the concepts of academic reading and writing and provide practice to enhance English language proficiency.

Synopsis

In this course, reading and writing have been organised around introductory concepts, skills and strategies that students need to develop in order to manage the academic language encountered in a university preparation course. Students perform a variety of tasks which require them to apply appropriate skills and strategies. Reading focuses on the process of reading, from previewing through to demonstrating a good working knowledge of the text. Writing also works through a process from brainstorming and organising ideas to writing first and final drafts.

Important assessment information

1. Attendance requirements:
   
   Students are required to attend at least 80% of the scheduled class sessions and ensure their attendance is registered with the staff member in charge of the activity. An exception to this attendance level may be made by the university where the student can produce documentary evidence that clearly demonstrates compassionate and compelling circumstances. In this case, attendance of at least 70% is the scheduled class sessions will be acceptable. It is the students' responsibility to access information regarding course-related activities and administration.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   
   Refer to statement 4 below to receive a passing grade in this course.
   All assessment items must be received prior to the start of the examination period for the intake in which the course is offered. Students may be required to re-submit an assessment piece that is unsatisfactory.
   
   
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   
   Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4).
   
   
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   
   Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
   
   Requirements after S1 2020:
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 50% of the marks available for that assessment item.
   
   Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.
   
   To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).
   
   
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   
   The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks /grades obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
   
   
6. Examination information:
   
   Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.
   
   Requirements after S1 2020:
   Closed examination. Candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments into the closed examination.
   
   
7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:

   Requirements after S1 2020:
   Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held at the end of each intake. A supplementary exam may be awarded, at the discretion of the Examiner, to students who do not pass a final exam for one of the core skills. It is expected that such students have gained at least 45% of the total weighted marks available for that core skill.

Assessment notes

1. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment during the course of the study. This must be produced within 24 hours if required by the Examiner. In accordance with the 精东传媒app's Assignment Extension Policy (Regulation 5.6.1), the examiner of a course may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
   
   
2. Referencing in assignments must comply with the Harvard (AGPS) referencing system. This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. Evaluation and benchmarking
