Rationale

Students need to demonstrate particular skills and attributes to be considered for acceptance into undergraduate study. The necessary standards are addressed by the three IHEP core courses. Consideration must be given to the ongoing effects of colonisation and the deliberate writing out of Aboriginal and Islander truths, stories, histories from mainstream curricula. Aboriginal students need exposure to texts that recognise resistance and strength in Aboriginal communities and validate self-worth whilst building study skills. This course is the second of three preliminary courses that scaffold students’ learning to ensure later success in the IHEP core courses.

Synopsis

Students will explore the resistance history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will engage in research and readings related to the study skills of summarising, reading for meaning and sentence construction. This course focuses on the power of the written word and the power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writing. General study skills will be delivered alongside an analysis of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander written and visual texts. The conventions of academic writing will be made explicit beginning with subject position, sentence structure and paragraph breakdowns.

1. Attendance requirements:
   
   This course requires attendance at a residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   
   To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.
   
   
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:

4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

   The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
