Rationale

This course will enable students to extend foundational knowledge and increase their awareness of the challenges women can experience during the childbearing continuum. The course will enable students to understand complications associated with pregnancy and birth and will enhance and extend students scope of practice in midwifery.

Synopsis

This course aims to provide the student with an understanding of the challenges associated with childbearing such as infertility, chronic illness, substance abuse, obesity, trauma and hypertension in pregnancy. Content also addresses complications related to birth such as breech, shoulder dystocia, maternal collapse, haemorrhage and malpresentation. Cultural aspects that can have an impact of childbearing, birth and the postnatal period will also be addressed.

This course contains a mandatory residential school.

Objectives

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges women can experience during pregnancy, labour, birth and in the puerperium
  2. Explore and examine the evidence to support midwifery care when women are confronted with challenges during the child bearing continuum.
  3. Use evidence based midwifery practice to critically assess the woman’s condition, and to plan and provide care in collaboration with other health professionals
  4. Provide evidence based midwifery care to women experiencing midwifery challenges across the childbearing continuum and evaluate complex midwifery care
  5. Demonstrate effective communication skills (oral and written) when caring for a woman and her family experiencing midwifery challenges during pregnancy, birth or postnatal period

  1. The dates and location of the mandatory residential school are available from the Residential School Timetable (12hrs total) (http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/current/resschoolsched.html).
  2. Students will work in small groups to prepare, present and actively participate in online tutorials. There are marks associated with attending and participating in 8 out of the 10 tutorials sessions. Students will need computer compatibility to use Zoom software and have video and audio enabled so they are visible to the course examiner during the tutorial. More information will be provided on ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Desk once the course has commenced.
  3. This will be an open examination. Students will be provided further instruction regarding the exam by their course examiner via ¾«¶«´«Ã½appDesk. The examination date will be available via UConnect when the official examination timetable has been released.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    Students must attend the mandatory residential school, including all the practical skills sessions, in the first week of semester. However, it is the students’ responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete the Residential School attendance and participation students must attend 100% of the Residential School and achieve 100% (mark 1 out of 1) for this item. To satisfactorily complete all other assessment items a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for each item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attend and receive a mark of 1 for the Residential School attendance and participation and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S1 2020: Closed: Candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments into a closed examination.

internal USQ accreditation/reaccreditation processes which include (i) stringent standards in the independent accreditation of its academic programs, (ii) close integration between business and academic planning, and (iii) regular and rigorous review. professional accreditation standards of the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council, (ANMAC), comparative activities and performance of Bachelor of Nursing and the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council, (ANMAC).

  1. The mandatory residential school is generally held as a 1.5 day block, two weeks prior to the commencement of Semester 1 and is held consecutively with the MID3102 Midwifery Challenges 2 – Neonatal residential school.
