Rationale

Organisations impact greatly on many aspects of our personal and professional lives. They define the way services are delivered through communication channels and policies and standards. The professional formation of being a nurse is integral within the health care system as Registered nurses are responsible and accountable for their own practice as regulated health professionals. The role of the nurse is fundamental in the monitoring and function of health care systems. Knowing the role of the nurse through leadership, followership, team building and conflict resolution forms a base to the professional formation of being a nurse. To successfully transition as a Registered Nurse undergraduate nursing students require knowledge of their own discipline as well as the interdisciplinary health team and the Australian health care system.

Synopsis

In this course undergraduate nursing students are introduced to fundamental elements influencing professional identity formation. Students reflect on personal skills and attributes to situate themselves within a developing professional identity. The professional nursing role will be explored within legal and ethical frameworks, professional relationships, leadership and management philosophies and boundaries with patients, families, and other health professionals.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Describe the history and development of nursing as a profession.
  2. Explain personal values and attributes that complement professional identity formation.
  3. Examine the professional role of the Registered Nurse in organisational structures, climate and culture.
  4. Examine the roles of the Registered Nurse within professional, legal, and ethical frameworks as they relate to the profession of nursing.
  5. Describe opportunities to develop clinical leadership attributes and conflict resolution strategies within the role of the Registered Nurse.
