Rationale

Children and adolescents represent a special population with regards to psychopathology and clinical intervention. This course aims to integrate theories of child and adolescent development with current approaches to the assessment and diagnosis of, and intervention for, the major disorders of childhood and adolescence.

Synopsis

This course will expand upon basic knowledge and theories of child development to explore the characteristics, epidemiology, causes, and treatment of psychopathology in children and adolescents. Students will engage with the course material via personal reading and critical reflection, discussion and debate in class and on-line, and through experiential skill development in three two-day mandatory workshops. Knowledge and skills will be assessed via a case-study based in-class test, and an essay and workshop presentation covering an evidence-based therapy for a particular presenting concern/group.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will have:

  1. demonstrated understanding of the core features, diagnosis and assessment of the major disorders of childhood and adolescence
  2. demonstrated understanding of the epidemiology and aetiological models involved in childhood psychopathology
  3. demonstrated knowledge and skill in the provision of therapeutic interventions for disorders of childhood and adolescence
  4. ability to independently search and critically analyse interventions for disorders of childhood and adolescence
  5. ability to present a professional development workshop on an aspect of child psychopathology or psychotherapy to interprofessional team of CYMHS clinicians.

  2. Students will present a professional development workshop to the CYMHS staff at the hospital on child psychotherapy interventions; date to be advised at workshop.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    Attendance at all workshops for this course is compulsory. It is the student's responsibility to participate actively in all workshops and Web-based activities and to study all course materials, so as to be informed of all course academic and administrative activities and policies, and to maximise his/her chance of meeting the objectives of the course.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete an assessment item satisfactorily, students must achieve at least 50% of the marks available each for the essay and workshop presentation, and 70% of the marks available for the skill exercises.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must achieve at least 50% of the weighted marks each for the essay and workshop presentation and at least 70% of the total weighted marks for the skills exercises, and must attend all workshops.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grade will be determined on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks (or grades) obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page; that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).

  3. APA style is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use 6th edition APA style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The APA style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide.
